All about Herbs: Red Clover

Herbs and herbal remedies are fascinating to me. When I studied for my Master of Herbology, I was struck with the abundance of remedies that can be found in the natural world. I’ve always been into herbs but in recent years I’ve gained even more knowledge and it’s been wonderful to apply this to my life. It’s incredible that the natural world has so many remedies for our bodies and tools to keep us healthy. I want to keep introducing you to this world by highlighting my favorite herbs because I am truly passionate about this subject. One herb that I find myself recommending to my clients is Red Clover.

Red Clover contains phytoestrogens that mimic estrogen so can be an incredible ally when struggling with symptoms of hormone imbalance. As we age our bodies produce less estrogen so Red Clover can help ease the transition. It has helped lots of my clients with hormone balance as they walk through fertility issues and also the life changes of menopause. (Be cautious with overusing red clover when you have a history of estrogen dominant cancer in your family).

This amazing herb has pain relieving properties due to anti-inflammatory compounds such as eugenol, myricetin and salicylic acid. Because of this, it can be used topically to treat sores, psoriasis, eczema and burns. In fact, a long time ago it was combined with nettle and made into a poultice and applied topically to wounds. To this day, you may find it as the main ingredient in natural balms and liniments. Red Clover is also really good for respiratory support and can be used to treat bronchitis and help ease the bronchial tubes. I sometimes drink it in tea form when I feel a cold coming on or when I have that lingering winter cough.

Red Clover is one of my go-to’s for an infusion or a nice cup of tea. See my post HERE on infusions and how to make them a part of your daily life. Red Clover has a long history of medicinal use and it is so good for your overall health and wellness. Not only that, herbal remedies are nourishing to your body as well so that is a win in my book!!!

I seel herbs in my shop, so pick some up if you come in for an appointment or want to swing by. Contact me first via email or phone to make sure I’m in the office.

You can also order them in bulk from Mountain Rose Herbs or Frontier, I trust both these places for quality!
